  • Excessive quantities of laundry soap, bleach, or other detergents will slow the breakdown of solids in the septic tank.

  • To open drains, use a drain snake and not chemical drain openers

  • Don't use septic tank additives – they do not improve the breakdown of solids in the tank. Some may even have a negative effect on the system.

  • Keep your septic system area clean of trees and bushes. Roots can cause problems with the system

  • Don't drive any vehicles over your septic system

  • Don't discharge a water treatment system or water softener into your septic system. This is a violation of the CT Health Code and is harmful to the system and its components.
